India's most prestigious examination for IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, and 24 other All India Services. Prelims (GS-I + CSAT) → Mains (9 papers) → Interview.
National Defence Academy
For 10+2 students joining the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Mathematics + General Ability Test (English, Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, Current Affairs).
Combined Defence Services
For graduates joining Indian Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, and Officers Training Academy. English + General Knowledge + Elementary Mathematics.
Central Armed Police Forces
For Assistant Commandant in BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB. General Ability & Intelligence + General Studies, Essay & Comprehension.
About UPSC
Constitutional Mandate
UPSC is a constitutional body (Articles 315–323) for recruitment to civil services and all-India services. The Chairman and members are appointed by the President of India.
CSE Selection
~1,000 candidates are selected out of ~10 lakh applicants each year — a 0.1% selection rate. The entire process takes 12–18 months from notification to final result.
Average Preparation
Most successful candidates prepare for 2–3 years. Average number of attempts before selection: 2.5. Maximum 6 attempts for General category (9 for OBC, unlimited for SC/ST before age limit).
